American West Adventure – Day 3

6/26/13

Got up early with the kids to check out Oxbow Bend at sunrise at Grand Teton National Park. It was very foggy but still amazing. We also saw a Raven eating an apple.

Next we entered Yellowstone National Park through the South entrance. We were staying up in the Canyon area but first we spent time at the West Thumb Geyser Basin overlooking Yellowstone Lake.

We spent a few hours exploring the sites of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River; including Artists Point (Lower Falls) and hiked down the steep Uncle Tom’s Trail to the base of the Lower Falls.

We did a lot today, as next we went to Hayden Valley to look for some wildlife. We saw Bison and walked part of Wapiti Lake Trail. Sofia had enough at this point so we just took it easy and had some fun along the way. I taught the kids a bad word (I won’t repeat here but I learned it from Phillip Seymour Hoffman in “Along Came Polly”) on our hike and that got the kids cracking up for a long time.  I made them promise not to repeat it once we got home and I can tell you now that we are back they sold me out!!!

We checked into our cabin in Canyon Village and got some homemade ice cream.  On the way back to our cabin we stopped one more time and hiked the Brink to the Upper Falls Trail.

In the car Houses of the Holy was on the radio and Brandon pipes in, “You mean there is no actual guy named Led Zeppelin in the band?”. I almost had a heart attack, but when I turned around B was smiling.  He’s heard me go on about Bonham and Page for years 🙂

We ate dinner at the Fountain & Grill followed by rootbeer floats. Ugh, several weeks without working out and ice cream twice in 4 hours!  Kids are in heaven of course.

We can’t possibly keep this up. Ready for a long night sleep (maybe).
