American West Adventure – Day 2

6/25/13

Tuesday morning we drove from Salt Lake out to Grand Teton National Park.  First we stopped at Walmart, got some styrofoam coolers, bug spray, bear spray, lots of snacks, milk, ice, bread and peanut butter.  Along the way we passed through Jackson, WY, which is a nice old fashioned town.  It was raining first half of the day, but we can’t complain as we had great weather most of the vacation.  We stopped at the Snake River and Oxford Bow Outlooks and made some plans to return at first light Wednesday morning to watch the sunrise from these interesting landscapes.

We stayed at Colter Bay Cabins, which was right by Jackson Lake.  On a hike around the lake we saw a beaver and the kids thought that was neat.  It took Sofia’s mind off the Bears she was thinking about.  I drilled into the kids’ heads what to do if we had a run-in with Black or Grizzly Bears, and we had bear spray, but I know she was a little nervous.  Her brother talking about bears a lot was not helping 🙂

We had Lucky Charms and Apple Jacks for dinner and Brandon read on his Kindle.  Sofia read the bottom 1/4th of each page which was funny.

I created a good playlist on my iPhone before our vacation.  Going out west I focused on some Americana-type stuff – Avett Brothers, Grateful Dead, The Band, Black Crowes and Mumford & Sons –  but I also downloaded a bunch of 80s music as the kids don’t really know that.  So right off the bat the kids are dancing around in the backseat listening to Prince, The Police, Journey and also some older stuff I’m exposing them too like The Who, Led Zep and the Beatles (who Brandon already loves). We have lots of mileage to put on this car the next 10 days or so and need some good tunes.

    • Thanks for reading! Unfortunately we only spent less than 2 days in Grand Teton before heading to Yellowstone, Glacier and further. That’s where we did most of our hiking. At Teton, we’d like to go back and do horse riding, Jenny Lake, and spend time in Jackson. I went to Yosemite when I was 19 or 20. I hiked down a mountain with my dad in a pair of Converse All-Stars. Learned a valuable lesson that day 🙂

      • LOL! Yeah, I can only imagine. I used to live about 2 hours from Yosemite. There’s a hike up the Mist Trail that is pretty — you walk up these stairs cut into the rock, going up alongside a waterfall — but once you get to the top…you’re kinda stuck. It’s steep and slippery going back down.

The first time we did it, my group and I were able to share water with other people who found themselves going on a 7 mile instead of 2 mile hike.
